Multimedia safety system for lifts

Enterprise systems

General information

This ambitious project by an Austrian start-up aims to establish a novel, multimedia safety system for lifts. It will help the operators of lift systems to reduce costs arising from the new mandatory emergency communication systems by also generating revenue using advertising space. Both of these objectives are set to be achieved without needing to compromise the reliability and safety of the system. People with restrictive physical disabilities will particularly benefit from the possibilities of this multimedia safety system. To achieve this goal, the development of the project combined an emergency voice module, intelligent advertising system with integrated emergency call system and visual feedback for people with disabilities.

The system consists of harmonised hardware and software components and is subdivided into a server solution, implemented as a scalable and deployable microservices architecture, and a client solution, which is self-sufficient for the most part and, if needed, communicates with the server via a GSM connection while also integrating various hardware components embedded in the lift. The emergency centre can establish direct contact with the person in the lift and manage the situation via an integrated camera and an emergency dialogue interface designed with the needs of handicapped people in mind.

Challenges
  • Potentially high loads for individual components such as content distribution
  • Integration of external heuristic systems and suggestion generators for the administration of advertising
  • Several thousand distributed and stand-alone client systems with remote update functionality
  • Connection of external I/O modules, cameras and accelerometers
  • Reliable detection of travel, movement and occupancy of a lift system
Technical data
  • Microservices-based software stack with NetflixOSS integration
  • Spring Boot as container solution for individual services
  • Spring Cloud for cloud support
  • REST interfaces for communication
  • Spring Security for authentication and authorisation
  • Spring MVC/Thymeleaf/Bootstrap/LESS with HTML5 for the implementation and design of the web interfaces
  • Relational and NoSQL databases (MongoDB)
  • JavaFx on the client for presenting advertising content and emergency dialogue
  • Java Native Access for the integration of hardware modules and device drivers
  • WebSockets for notifications generated on the server side (e.g. emergency calls)
